Dear Theresa,

Thank you so much for taking your valuable time to talk to my new mom and dad. Most of all, thank you for rescuing me and saving my life! I feel so much better now and am enjoying the things that were so unfamiliar to me before. I can't get too much lovin' and the food, the walks, the green grass, and all the unrestricted space to roam, are just almost more than I can take in. My eyes, my tail, and my happy romping tell the whole story. Please know that you and the wonderful people in your staff will always hold a special place in our hearts.

My dad is sending a copy of his letter to the Pueblo West View just in case you didn't see it before.

God bless you all for the wonderful work you have done and are doing for me and all my cousins.

Much love,
Emma, F9-55

Recently our beloved Golden Retriever succumbed to kidney failure, and we had no choice but to have her humanely euthenized. The pain we feel is indescribable, the loss is as much as if a human member of the family passed away.

We have begun to look for an adoptive friend to help fill the hole that remains. We have applied to some pet rescue shelters, (thank God for them), and are becoming aware of the plight of animals in our “civilized” culture.

We have, like most people, heard of “puppy mills” and had some idea of the poor treatment given to those animals unfortunate enough to be in one. The real story makes our idea of poor treatment seem like a slap on the hand compared to a flogging.

Our President has said that in this country we do not torture people, and that is mostly true, what cannot be said is we do not torture animals. The neglect and physical and mental mistreatment can only be termed cruel torture similar to, and in some cases beyond, cruelty shown to POWs by some Asian countries.

Crammed into cages, sometimes three to four in one cage, with no exercise, no freedom to roam at will, sometimes branded or ear-tagged for identification, living on bare ground or wire mesh floors, in their own feces and urine, handled roughly by the scruff, tail, leg, or whatever handle presents itself, frightened, in pain, suffering from eye diseases, wounds inflicted by cage-mates, rotted teeth, gums, and jaws, tumors, bred twice yearly, left to give birth without proper help or care, hosed-down with cold water, housed without proper ventilation in mercilessly hot or cold buildings, or exposed to wind and weather, these pitiful “friends to man” are sacrificed for money. Surplus animals are auctioned off to other mill-breeders and those who are no longer productive, are disposed of in ways I don’t even want to know.

This “industry” can only be termed despicable at best, yet remains uncontrolled. Law enforcement is largely unable to do anything because there are no laws. The only way this horrible practice can be stopped is by refusing to buy their product. The product, puppies that are often suffering from in-bred weaknesses and difficulties that don’t show up until later, may be less expensive than those from legitimate breeders, but can have very expensive vet bills in their future. By passing the puppy sellers by, you can give a voice to those who can only speak with their eyes and their actions.

Puppies are so cute and appealing that they are difficult to resist, children can put the pressure on too, so it’s hard to say no. Please, for the sake of the animals yet to be victimized, say NO! Put your heart to better use and look into adopting animals that are available from many sources. Go to petfinder.com or milldogrescue.org or petharbor.com and look at the lost and found link and the available link and you will see many friends that can make your life happier. Give pets the respect, love, and care they deserve.
